He strode in slightly flustered, holding a copy of what seems to be today’s Life! section from The Straits Time. Did he just came from his morning coffee session?! He was late for half and hour (he got lost around the area), but no one in the room seemed to mind.

Clad unassumingly in a white short sleeve V-neck top with khaki pants, no one would expect him to be a fashion designer. Well, at least not as the brain behind one of Singapore’s most established fashion label.

The first thing I noticed about him once he walked into our studio was that, he is very taut and fit and his skin glows with a healthy tan. In fact, he looked hella good for a man in his 40s!

He said he wasn’t prepared for the talk, as he had totally forgotten bout it till his secretary reminded him earlier that morning. I had expected him to babble off-topic (like some overly enthusiastic guests), but he was totally cool and eloquent.

He had a lilting Brit accent, and when he speaks, he commands great attention and openly showed his annoyance whenever someone’s phone went off. He was frank and straightforward; telling us exactly what was expected of our portfolio.

“Don’t be stupid to include all the boards – they are going to weight you down big time.” “Shrink everything down to A4 if possible, it’ll be awesome. Really.” “Don’t show everything - Quality over quantity any day.”

Other than that, he advised us bout finding our style and setting realistic goals. This piece of advice knocked me back to my senses.

“If you can’t create designs like Galliano’s, move on and find your own style. Don’t keep chasing dreams; Realize them.”

Today, I met Wykidd Song.

Why kid who??!

Wykidd Song. One half of Song+Kelly21.

And that was no Life! he brought in; that was his autumn/winter catalogue.
