I love sewing and I love every single process involved in it.
I love it when I trace seam allowances around my paper pattern, mentally checking that I mark every notches. I love it when I steam and iron every crease out of my fabric, laying them flat on the patterner’s table, waiting for it to “relax”.
I love it when I lay out my paper pattern, trying out different layout/possibilities in order to cut down on fabric wastage. I love the pining, cutting, sewing/overlocking… even unpicking!
Unfortunately, I cannot stand finishing my garments. In case you don’t get it, finishing is one of the most crucial process in dressmaking. Shoddy finishings never fails to magnify workmanship mistakes by 200% (100% for untrained eyes).
Oh, how many times have I messed up a perfectly proper pants cos I “literally screwed up” the waistband? How many times have my skirts ended up one side longer than another cos the hungry overlocking monster ate up more than 1cm?
Sigh.
They say fashion is glamorous. We say fashion is not.
I like to think that I’ve already finished school (ok, I know I’m retained). So for god’s sake, I cannot stand being thought of as a fashion wannabe, eyes glossed over URBAN, still learning how to do tie dye on T-shirt.
Now tell me… How much… just how much other than dollar and cents, does it takes to start my own label?
