I don’t understand why home sewers like to work with ribbons & trimmings. And gaudy fabrics.
Grosgrain ribbon, satin ribbon, velvet ribbon, lace ribbon, crochet trimmings, beaded trimmings.. et cetera et cetera. Gaudy fabrics with big big flowers, metallic yarns, off beat colours. And et ceteraet cetera.
Sometimes the simplest outfit looks the most professional (provided it was well cut and made). Add in the trimmings, it cheapens the hard work and 36 hours one put in to make it.
Details don’t necessary have to pop and stand out right in your face. I know small time home sewers do not have the ability to procuring trimmings in matching colours. So instead of using contrast trimmings to highlight the waist/hem, why not just cut from the self-fabric? A bias cut (on checks fabric) is an easy and sweet way to add in details.
Good design is good because one appreciate it more when its viewed up close, instead of shying away when come into view.
It saddens me to see a proper classic black coat gets fucked up with polka dot grosgrain ribbons and velvet ribbons, “cheered up just in time for a funeral”.
Hand-to-forehead.
